چکیده

This is the second of a pair of papers which describe an investigation into the feasibility of providing artificial balance to paraplegics using electrical stimulation of the paralyzed muscles. By bracing the body above the shanks, only stimulation of the plantar flexors is necessary. This arrangement prevents any influence from the intact neuromuscular system above the spinal cord lesion. In this paper, we present experimental results from intact and paraplegic subjects.

Feedback control of unsupported standing.

This paper presents the results of continuing work on feedback control of unsupported standing in paraplegia. Our experimental setup considers a situation in which all joints above the ankle are braced, and stabilising torque at the ankle is generated by stimulation of the plantarflexors. A previous study showed that short periods of unsupported standing with paraplegic subjects could be achiev...

Optimal Control of Ankle Joint Moment: Toward Unsupported Standing in Paraplegia - Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on

This paper considers part of the problem of how to provide unsupported standing for paraplegics by feedback control. In this work our overall objective is to stabilize the subject by stimulation only of his ankle joints while the other joints are braced. Here, we investigate the problem of ankle joint moment control. The ankle plantarflexion muscles are first identified with pseudorandom binary...

Training unsupported sitting does not improve ability to sit in people with recently acquired paraplegia: a randomised trial.

QUESTION Do people with recently acquired paraplegia benefit from a six-week motor retraining program aimed at improving their ability to sit unsupported? DESIGN A randomised controlled trial with concealed allocation, assessor blinding, and intention-totreat analysis. PARTICIPANTS 32 people with recently acquired paraplegia and limited ability to sit unsupported. INTERVENTION All partici...

Nonlinear modelling of FES-supported standing up in paraplegia for selection of feedback sensors

This paper presents analysis of the standing–up manoeuvre in paraplegia considering the body supportive forces as a potential feedback source in FES-assisted standing–up. The analysis investigates the significance of particular feedback signals to the human body centreof-mass (COM) trajectory reconstruction. Two nonlinear empirical modeling methods are implemented (Gaussian process priors (GP) ...
